Energy Taxation in France (cepInput)

The EU Commission is planning an amendment to the energy tax directive. Accordingly, national taxes on fossil fuels throughout the EU should be based on their CO2 content and subsidies should be phased out. Against this background, cepFrance has analysed the current French energy taxation.

France is ahead of other EU Member States because French energy taxes on fossil fuels are already partly based on their CO2 content and it is planned to reduce their subsidies from 2020. In order to increase the acceptance for this after the Yellow Vest protests, the French government should repay a considerable part of the revenues from fossil fuel taxes to households and companies.
