The EU Commission wants larger quantities of plastic waste to be recycled and, with proper disposal, prevented from entering the oceans. It has therefore submitted a Strategy for Plastics in the Circular Economy.

Status

In cep’s view, uniform EU standards would make is easier to trade in recycled plastic products in the internal market. Uniform EU definitions for “biodegradable plastics” and “compostable plastics” will also help consumers to dispose of products and packaging properly. cep points out, however, that Ecodesign rules represent significant intervention in the freedom of companies to design their own products. Rules requiring companies to acquire a certain quantity of recycled plastic may also have a negative impact on the quality of plastic products and packaging.
