Italy is set to become the European hub for energy supplies from Africa in the coming years. To this end, the Meloni government has drawn up an ambitious plan for a strategic partnership with the African continent. Eleonora Poli from Centro Politiche Europee | Roma (cep) has examined the "Piano Mattei" and sees it as an opportunity to promote economic development in Africa.

cepAdhoc

The so-called Mattei Plan is named after the founding president of the Italian energy company ENI, Enrico Mattei. In addition to energy supply, it also includes combating irregular migration flows and expanding the infrastructure of the Italian agricultural and food industry. For Italy, it is a key pillar of the current G7 presidency. In Africa itself, environmentally friendly investments are to be made and institutional capacities expanded.
