Slovakia takes over the EU Presidency

Following the Netherlands and against the background of the Brexit and the refugee crisis, Slovakia today takes on the EU presidency until December. For this reason, the European Commission is to meet today in Bratislava.

On Tuesday, the Government of Slovakia presented its presidency programme. The UK can’t only profit without fulfilling obligations, Slovak Foreign Minister Lajcak emphasised. Robert Rico, Slovakia’s Prime Minister called for a thorough rethinking in the EU following the Brexit. In his opinion it’s high time for politicians to realise that they failed to explain the benefits of the European project to the European citizens. State secretary Denisa Sakova spoke out against distributing refugees on the basis of country-specific quota. She states that another solution has to be found.

A special summit will take place in Bratislava on 16 September 2016.
