Work has started on a new power interconnection across the alps to Italy

French power grid operator RTE has started work on a power interconnection across the Alps to Italy to ease congestion on existing lines, Reuters reported. Boosting electric interconnections between member states is one of the EU's top priorities to improve security of supply, the news agency pointed out. In a recent paper, the cep argues that before capacity mechanisms are brought in to ensure sufficient electricity generating capacity, it is necessary to examine whether the expansion of cross-border power lines and greater integration of the EU internal energy market can be sufficient for this.
