Refugee crisis - breakthrough postponed

Following difficult negotiations in Brussels, EU-Leaders and Turkey have reached draft conclusions which may contribute to the reduction of refugee flows, once implemented.

Before such reduction to take effect, the draft conclusions will have to be worked out in detail and then be implemented. Uncertainty will hence remain at least until the next summit next week. The European Union Member States will have to decide by then whether they are willing to accept Turkey’s demand for six billion euro in return for stopping the flow of migrants to Greece. Hungary has already announced its opposition. The deal is not yet sealed, even though EU-leaders now declare that “irregular flows of migrants along the Western Balkans route have now come to an end.“
