After the EU summit – waiting for a solution

On 18th of March 2016, EU leaders decided on an agreement with Turkey to solve the refugee crisis. As refugees continue to cross over from Turkey into Greece, the agreement waits to be fulfilled.

Central to the agreement is a mechanism which will allow Greece to effectively deport unwanted refugees back to Turkey. In return, according to the agreement, the EU will take one Syrian refugee from Turkey for each one sent back to Turkey. In this way it is hoped that many potential refugees will be dissuaded for crossing the Aegean and the smugglers' business will be disrupted.
