2021

Cyberattacks increasingly threaten financial institutions in the European Union. The EU Commission therefore wants to foster the stability and security of the European financial sector and its financial institutions such as banks, insurance undertakings or trading venues by means of a new Regulation. The Freiburg think tank Centrum für Europäische Politik has examined the Commission's plans in a cepPolicyBrief.

2021

The European Union wants to strengthen consumer rights across borders by 2025. This includes a reform of the Package Travel Directive as part of a new EU consumer agenda. During the corona pandemic, travel providers often compensated customers for cancelled package tours only with vouchers. The Centrum für Europäische Politik has examined the new EU consumer agenda in a policy brief.

2021

The European Union wants to reduce CO2 emissions to zero by 2050. The transport sector shall also make a greater contribution to this. With its "Sustainable Mobility Strategy", the EU Commission is counting on a further tightening of CO2 limits for passenger cars, vans and trucks. For the first time, the EU Commission is also considering the use of an emissions trading scheme (ETS) for road transport.

2021

Parallel trade in medicines is causing problems in the EU internal market. Traders from Member States with high price levels buy medicines in low-price Member States in order to sell them cheaper in their country of origin and thus gain market advantages. The Centre for European Policy (cep) has studied these problems and described theoretical solutions.

2021

The EU Commission wants to check companies from third countries more strictly for prohibited state aid. The focus is especially on China. On 05 May 2021 the EU Commission presented a new regulation. The Centre for European Policy calls on Brussels to act uniformly.

2021

Crises and ruptures are increasingly showing the European Union the limits of its own ability to act. The EU Commission is therefore striving for a more self-confident role for Europe in the world with "open strategic autonomy". The Centre for European Policy (cep) has critically analysed this plan.

2021

The European Commission wants to present a proposal for a uniform Front-of-Pack label system for food by 2022. Labels on packaging should improve the understanding of the nutritional value of industrially produced food. The dispute between supporters of different systems is making waves.

2021

The European Union wants to reduce CO2 emissions in the shipping sector. Brussels plans to include unilaterally emissions of the greenhouse gas in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), probably in mid-2021. The Centre for European Policy (cep) criticises the plan as inappropriate.

2021

Worldwide, more than 700,000 people die every year from infections with resistant bacteria. According to the UN, there could be up to ten million by 2050. In a study, the Centrum für Europäische Politik (cep) calls for measures against an impending shortage of antibiotics. The Freiburg-based think tank with partner institutes in Paris and Rome thus supports a key point of the new EU Pharmaceutical Strategy.

2021

The EU Commission wants to promote the sharing of valuable data held by public authorities, companies and private individuals. This includes data donations, such as the voluntary sharing of health data for research into the Corona pandemic.

2021

The ratio of non-performing loans (NPL) is increasing again in the member states of the European Union for the first time in five years. The Centre for European Policy (cep) has examined the problem of so-called bad loans in detail in a cepPolicyBrief with a view to proposals by the EU Commission.

2021

The EU wants to reduce emissions of greenhouse gas to net zero by 2050, and by 2030 get them down by 55% compared to 1990 levels. To achieve this ambitious goal, the number of energy-efficient building renovations is to at least double by 2030. "Expensive subsidies and small-scale individual regulatory measures should be dispensed in favour of an emissions trading system as the main instrument," demands Martin Menner of the Centre for European Policy (cep).

2021

Bitcoin is on the rise. The European Commission has therefore presented a proposal for a Regulation to regulate cryptocurrencies. Before the Commission's proposal is finally approved by the European Council and the European Parliament, the Centrum für Europäische Politik (cep) reports a need for change.

2021

The EU Commission wants to presentin 2021 a legislative proposal to reduce methane emissions. The greenhouse gas methane, which is mainly produced by leakages from gas pipes, landfills and in agriculture through the digestive process of cows and sheep, has so far not been covered by emissions trading. The Centre for European Policy (cep) is calling on Brussels to include methane emissions in the energy and waste sectors into an emissions trading system.

2021

Stable cryptocurrencies, so-called stablecoins, are on the rise. Tech giant Facebook is planning to launch the stablecoin Diem with more than 20 companies such as Spotify and Uber. The company's own crypto-based payment system is expected to emerge this year. The EU is working to create a legal framework.

There are still high hurdles to overcome on the way to a common deposit insurance scheme for the Eurozone (EDIS), which the EU Commission is striving for. This is the result of an input by the Centre for European Policy (cep) comparing the banking systems of Germany, France and Italy.
