The Treaty of Lisbon entered into force on 1. December 2009. It replaced the Treaty of Nice.
On 13. December 2007 the heads and foreign ministers of the 27 Member States ceremoniously signed the Treaty of Lisbon. Originally, the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty was scheduled for 1. January 2009. As is the case with all international treaties, all national parliaments – and in Ireland the people - had to approve it and the respective head of State had to ratify the Treaty with his signature.
In the case of the Treaty of Lisbon, the process of ratification was closed on 13 November 2009 with a delay of eleven months when all Member States had deposited their ratification instruments at the Italian Government in Rome (Germany on 25. September 2009).
