The financial crisis in Greece has been keeping the euro area on edge for quite a while. The CEP Expertise "No Bail-out for Greece" (22.03.2010) deals with the legal and economic aspects of a Bail-out for Greece. The CEP Legal Opinion on the Brussels Compromise (26.03.2010) comments on the decisions of the Eurozone heads of state and government on 25 March 2010. The CEP Analysis "Breach of Law through Bail-out" (19.04.2010) analyses the decisions taken by the EU ministers of finance on 11 and 16 April 2010.
A bailout for Greece through the remaining Member States is not compatible with EU law. Also from an economic perspective is a bailout borne by Member States to be strictly rejected. The Greek crisis epitomises the failure of the Stability and Growth Pact. To this end, sanctions against actions running counter to the Pact should be automatised, instead of being subjected to deliberations in the Council. The decisions taken by the EU ministers of finance on 11 and 16 April 2010 constitute a breach of law.
