Economic policy coordination at EU level embraces large numbers of initiatives. In particular, the strategy “Europe 2020” in conjunction with the guidelines for economic policies and employment as well as the stability and growth pact. The latest coordination tool is macroeconomic surveillance. It introduction was triggered by current account imbalances and diverging national unit labour costs which could lead to economic tensions between Member States. Equally new is the “European Semester” which coordinates said initiatives by synchronising its content and course.
The aim of coordination initiatives is to optimise coordination of national economic policies. The primary law provisions regarding the coordination of economic policies are laid down in Art. 119 to 126 TFEU.
