The EU Environment Ministers on Wednesday reached a political agreement on a regulation for setting out new EU-wide rules for monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of CO2 emissions from ships. International maritime shipping is currently the only transport mode that is not included in the EU's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Monitoring CO2 emissions from ships is the first step in a staged approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in this sector as well,” the ministers said. From January 2018, ship-owners will be obliged to monitor emissions for each ship on a per voyage and an annual basis. cep expert Nima Nader believes that the MRV system for CO2 emissions in maritime shipping will help to gather a better data basis than the current method of estimating emissions based on average values of different ship models.
